Project-Based Teaching of the Slovene Language - Translation Projects as an Opportunity for Acquiring Knowledge, Specific References, and Motivation Enhancement

Abstract

Translation tasks are a fundamental part of learning and studying translation. However, from the perspective of in-depth work, understanding, striving for results, and a sense of satisfaction, they are often less effective than real translation projects. Modern learning theories place the student's activity at the center. The contribution justifies why the implementation of specific translation projects is an effective way to learn translation and intercultural skills, acquire new vocabulary, and engage in teamwork. Simultaneously, it provides an opportunity to increase student motivation and strengthen competencies such as independence, responsibility, and resourcefulness. The second part introduces translation projects that we have completed or are currently undertaking, involving translation students at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Translation Studies and Slovenian studies students at the Institute of Slavic Studies at the University of Graz. We present the workflow and feedback provision. In the end, we present a brief survey to assess students' attitudes toward the mentioned projects.
